Welcome to the personal website of Simon Elliston Ball.
I am a web developer based in Cambridge and London, but mainly on the train in between the two. My expertise ranges widely across PHP, specifically with the CakePHP and Zend frameworks, as well as bespoke systems, and Java Spring based solutions at the more enterprise end. I have a wealth of supporting technology experience to go with these basic languages, include MySQL in large deployments, MS SQL Server, XML, XSLT, Asterisk, linux and windows administration experience, and a whole wealth of other technologies. Recently I’ve added a lot of javascript work to my bow, including heavy use of the ExtJS framework and JQuery in a variety of forms. I’ve also taken to developing web sites and applications in Ruby on Rails, and have dabbled somewhat in iOS development. Next up is a bit of Android, and some one once made me do a fair amount .NET, but only by paying me.
I have worked in advertising, new media, publishing, have edited novels, written a screenplay worked on large scale e-commerce, ERP, telephony, and now work in finance as Head of IT for a hedge-fund.
This site will provide a repository of articles on technology, some more personal ravings, some photos, mainly for my friends, and anything else which happens to pique my interest, and push its way into my somewhat limited time.
